Director Ryan Coogler, best known as creator of Black Panther, combines horror and legend and blues music in stunningly creative ways for Sinners. Set in 1932 Mississippi, twin brothers Smoke and Stack return to their hometown to make a new start, probably with money stolen from Al Capone. They plan to open a juke joint on property bought from the leader of the local Klan. The twins recruit their cousin Sammie, a guitarist who either has or hasn't made a deal with the devil, in spite of warnings from his evangelist father. That plot point opens the door for Irish vampires to invade, followed by a shootout with the Klan, and a wow of a finish. Michael B. Jordan plays the twins with finesse. Hailee Steinfeld adds interest as one of the twin's half white ex-girlfriend. Delroy Lindo gives heft to the mystic nature of things. Miles Caton plays Cousin Sammy with the right touch of innocence. Oh yeah, did I mention it's a musical. This monster mash is a scream, and one of the most creative movies of the year.
