Beautiful Creatures Review - 3 Stars

The beginning of an interesting new series about a teen witch and a high school boy drawn to each other — they’re rebels in a tiny Southern town and you know how that goes.  O.k. O.k. —I get it, it’s “Twilight” except the girl’s from the other world and the boy’s normal.  But I like this way “Beautiful Creatures” plays out.  The girl – played by Alice Englert – has good acting chops and good chemistry with Alden Ehrenreich – the high school boy who likes her.  “Beautiful Creatures” also has an A list of grown up actors, including Jeremy Irons as Alice’s “Uncle” and protector, Emma Thompson as a nosy neighbor who morphs into Alice’s mother, and the great Viola Davis as the keeper of the town secrets.  Unlike “Twilight” I think “Beautiful Creatures” has a chance to develop into something interesting if it turns into a tween romance series.  Does it deliver what it promises?  “Twilight” only watchable.  Is it entertaining?  Good adult cast and funny too.  Is it worth the price of admission?  For a Southern Gothic, yeah.
